A major supplier of generic Lipitor, the cholesterol cutting drug, has issued a massive recall. On November 9, 2012, Ranbaxy Laboratories issued a retail-level recall of multiples lots of atorvastatin 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg tablets. According to Ranbaxy, “This recall is being initiated because of the potential for these batches to contain a foreign substance (small glass particles of less than 1 mm).” Additionally, they indicated that, “At this time we have not been able to confirm if any of the lots of drug product we are voluntarily recalling do in fact contain any foreign substance. However, out of abundance of caution and keeping the safety of our customers in mind, Ranbaxy is proactively recalling the drug product lots.”
The affected lots were in distribution between September 25, 2012 and November 9, 2012
CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy Response:
Caremark Mail uses another manufacturer (Mylan) as the primary supplier of atorvastatin and retains a very limited stock of the recalled Ranbaxy products. The very limited stock of recalled product at the CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy has been segregated and will not be dispensed. The mail service pharmacy will continue to dispense atorvastatin produced by another manufacturer without interruption. Plan members who have questions about their atorvastatin prescriptions filled by the CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy may contact Customer Care at the phone number on their benefit ID card.
Recalled product at CVS/pharmacy retail locations has been segregated and will not be dispensed. CVS/pharmacy retail locations have contracts in place with alternate manufacturers to supply atorvastatin to continue filling these prescriptions for patients. CVS/pharmacy customers who have questions/concerns about their atorvastatin prescriptions should speak with their local CVS pharmacist or call 1-800-SHOP-CVS.
Other Retail Pharmacies:
Plan members who filled their prescription at other retail pharmacies should contact their pharmacy provider for additional information
We expect that other pharmacies in our retail networks who stocked Ranbaxy’s atorvastatin are taking the appropriate actions in connection with the recall and are working to secure adequate supply
Information may also be obtained from the manufacturer at 1-888-RANBAXY (1-888-726-2299) or visit www.ranbaxyusa.com.
Unfortunately, lot numbers are not supplied on the adjudicated claim so Comptroller’s office is not able to identify the specific impact for this recall. Comptroller’s office are able to provide you with the overall utilization for the impacted atorvastatin NDC’s, but keep in mind that the recall only impacted specific lot numbers within these NDC’s. For the timeframe of 9/25/12-11/9/12 there were 2,952 utilizers on the State of CT Commercial plan and 2,513 on the Medicare Part D plan. Again, this is not representative of the actual impact since there were only a limited number of lots recalled.
