West Hartford School Bus Workers After Delivering Request to Durham School Services to Recognize their Union Voice in April |
On April 11, twenty-five school bus drivers working for Durham School Services, the contractor to West Hartford Public Schools, delivered their local manager a letter asking the company to voluntarily recognize their union voice without delay. Ignoring the majority of its workers' desire to from a union, they insisted on the longer Labor Board election process.
The election was held Friday, May 30, and an overwhelming majority -- 94% -- of the workforce voted for union recognition. Now the drivers, mechanics, and fuelers have a voice for tackling the issues they face on the job; from buses breaking down, to unfilled vacancies, to a general lack of respect for their concerns.
